Multiple description coding over multiple correlated erasure channels

چکیده
This paper examines the use of Multiple Description Coding (MDC) for information transmission over multiple correlated erasure channels. It addresses the problem of optimal rate allocation between descriptions to attain the minimum possible average distortion at the receiver. The rate allocation problem is formulated on the basis of rate-distortion theory for the general case of unbalanced MDC and under the constraint that the total coding rate is fixed. The channel parameters, that is, erasure rates, for which MDC outperforms Single Description Coding are characterised. It is shown that MDC is optimal when the channel erasure rates are comparable and the total coding rate is large. A heuristic approximation for optimal rate allocation is also presented, which can be readily used in practice to determine the relative rates between descriptions needed to achieve the minimal average distortion. The relationship between the optimal average distortion and the erasure correlation is explored. It is shown that for some cases, such as for equal average erasure probabilities, the average distortion decreases as the channel correlation increases. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A Method to Reduce Effects of Packet Loss in Video Streaming Using Multiple Description Coding
Multiple description (MD) coding has evolved as a promising technique for promoting error resiliency of multimedia system in real-time application programs over error-prone communicational channels. Although multiple description lattice vector quantization (MDCLVQ) is an efficient method for transmitting reliable data in the context of potential error channels, this method doesn’t consider disc...

Multiple Description Coding (MDC) is a plausible way to use the diversity of packet networks to increase the robustness of the transmission to packet losses. The redundancy that is introduced via MDC can also be used to increase the robustness of the transmission to bit-errors. This paper presents a novel decoding method for GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model)-based MDC in the presence of detected bit...

A robust video coding scheme using multiple description coding (MDC) is presented. MDC is an effective approach to combat packet losses in the Internet and wireless networks. The new coder is built on the top of the video coding standard H. 263 baseline coder and employs multiple description vector quantization using translated lattices with local optimization (MDVQ-TLLO). MDVQ-TLLO introduces ...

This thesis devises quantization and source-channel coding schemes to increase the error robustness of the newly standardized ITU-T G.711.1 speech coder. The schemes employ Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based multiple description quantizers (MDQ). The thesis reviews the literature focusing on GMM based quantization, MDQ, and GMM-MDQ design methods and bit allocation schemes. GMM-MDQ are then des...

With Asymmetric Multiple Description Coding we address the transmission case where there is a plethora of communication paths between sender and receiver, all with a different bandwidth and different levels of reliability (in terms of packet loss rate). For this scenario we have several possibilities for coding and transmission at our disposal, namely Round-Robin transmission, Layered Coding, T...
